ASME SA 240 Chromium and Chromium-Nickel Stainless Steel Plate, Plate, and Strip Specification for Pressure Vessels and General Applications

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ASME SA 240 standard. Developed by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the SA 240 standard covers chromium, chromium nickel and chromium-manganese-nickel stainless steel plate, sheet and strip for pressure vessels and general applications. The steel shall comply with the chemical composition requirements and the applicable requirements set out in Specification A 480/A 480M.

Unless the Orientation of Test Samples is specified in the purchase order as transverse samples (long axis of the sample crossed to the final rolling direction, root of the notch perpendicular to the rolling surface), the orientation of the samples will be longitudinal (long axis of the sample, parallel to the final rolling direction, root of the notch perpendicular to the rolling surface). The manufacturer is allowed to test transverse specimens provided they meet the valid acceptance criteria for longitudinal specimens. Unless otherwise specified in the purchase order, samples will be taken to include the medium thickness of the product.

Test Temperature, the receiver will indicate the test temperature. The manufacturer is permitted to test samples at a lower temperature than specified by the purchaser, provided they meet the acceptance criteria applicable to samples tested at the specified temperature.

Applicable to some duplex (austenitic-ferritic) stainless steels listed in Test Methods A 923, Test Methods A 923, Method B, uses a Charpy impact test to determine the absence of harmful intermetallic phases. Method B specifies a test temperature and acceptance criteria, expressed as impact energy, for each type of steel covered. It can be economical for Charpy impact tests performed. On duplex stainless steels to both Specification A 240 and Test Methods A 923, measurement of both lateral expansion and impact energy shall be performed at the lower of the temperatures specified by this additional requirement and Test Methods A 923 Method B.

Limit of Acceptance, unless otherwise specified in the purchase order, each of the three specimens tested shall exhibit a lateral expansion of not less than 0,015 inch [0,38 mm] across the notch. Recorded results should include sample orientation, sample size, test temperature, absorbed energy values (if necessary), and lateral expansion across the notch.

Values stated in inch-pound units or SI units should be considered standard separately. The values specified in each system are not exactly equivalent; therefore, each system should be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in non-compliance with the specification. This specification is expressed in both inch-pounds and SI units. However, material will be supplied in inch-pound units unless the applicable "M" specification designation (SI units) is specified in the order.
