Biodegradability Test

Material Testing

Biodegradability Test

Also known as biodegradability testing, choosing the most appropriate test method to demonstrate the biodegradability of a finished product is an important issue for material suppliers and manufacturers. Biodegradability testing deals with environmentally friendly physical property degradation of products and materials under certain environmental conditions. Biodegradable plastics are a high potential market. The growth of this market can be attributed to the increasing demand for biodegradable plastics in various end-use industries in emerging economies such as India, China and Brazil.

Biodegradability Test

As well as the quality and safety of packaging materials, their disposal is now key when it comes to manufacturer's product liability. Biodegradable packaging materials meet the needs of increasing consumer awareness for sustainable use and adapt to circular economy processes. Clear labeling of biodegradable materials is essential for this. Therefore, biodegradability and compostability tests are a prerequisite.

ASTM D6691
This determines the aerobic biodegradation of plastic materials in the marine environment with a defined microbial consortium or natural seawater vaccine. This test method was developed to evaluate the rate and extent of aerobic biodegradation of plastics exposed to marine microorganisms.

ASTM D5338 / ISO 14855
This determines the aerobic biodegradation of plastic materials under controlled composting conditions that include thermophilic temperatures to simulate conditions under the topsoil.

ASTM D6400
This is a standard for labeling plastics designed to be composted aerobically in municipal or industrial facilities. Products that meet the requirements may be labeled "compostable at municipal or industrial aerobic facilities" in accordance with guidelines issued by the Federal Trade Commission, provided the appropriate qualifications for the availability of such facilities are indicated on the label.

ASTM D5511 / ISO 15985
This determines the anaerobic biodegradation of plastic materials under high solids anaerobic digestion conditions. This test method may resemble some conditions in biologically active landfills, where the gas produced is recovered and biogas production is actively supported by inoculation, humidity control and temperature control.

Conformity assessment with requirements for packaging suitable for organic recycling in accordance with EN 13432, ISO 17088, ASTM D6400 and ISO 18606
