BS 476-20 Fire Tests on Building Materials and Structures, Part 20. Determination of Fire Resistance of Structural Elements

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of BS 476-20 standard. As described in chapter and related sections of BS 476, the purpose of determining fire resistance is to evaluate the behavior of a sample of a building construction element when subjected to defined heating and pressure conditions.

BS 476-20 Fire Tests on Building Materials and Structures, Part 20. Determination of Fire Resistance of Structural Elements

The method provides a means of measuring the ability of an element to withstand exposure to high temperatures by specifying criteria by which load-bearing capacity, fire containment (integrity) and thermal conductivity (insulation) functions can be judged.

A representative sample of the elements is exposed to a specific heating regime and the performance of the test sample is monitored based on the criteria described in the standard.

The fire resistance of test elements is expressed as the time period when appropriate criteria are met. The times thus obtained are a measure of the adequacy of the structure in a fire, but have no direct relation to the duration of an actual fire.
