This standard specifies a test method for measuring the lateral spread of flame along the surface of a vertically oriented product sample under opposing flow conditions and a classification system based on propagation velocity and extent.
It provides data suitable for comparing the end-use performance of essentially flat materials, composites or assemblies used primarily as exposed surfaces of walls or ceilings.
The sample is mounted in a water-cooled holder and exposed to a radiant panel for a test period of ten minutes. Additionally, a pilot flame is applied to the lower corner of the sample during the first minute of the test. The time required for the flame front to reach the reference marks on the specimen is noted during the one minute and thirty second test period and the degree of flame spread at the end of the test. Observations are also made regarding the combustion behavior.
