BS 5852 Flammability Test Standard for Upholstered Seats and Seats

The BS 5852 standard, designed by the British Standards Institute (BSI), forms the basis of legal requirements for home furnishings, mainly: furniture, beds, supports, bedding, folding beds, mattresses, upholstery fabrics for baby furniture, garden furniture and fabrics for caravans and seat and sofa cushions.
On the other hand, sleeping bags, bed linen including duvets, pillow cases, curtains and carpets are outside the scope of this standard. Interior designers must ensure that the fabrics they want to use are suitable for this purpose and pass BS 5852 tests.

BS 5852 Flammability Test Standard for Upholstered Seats and Seats

The first part of the standard regulates fire tests for seating group furniture. It describes a test method for determining the flammability of seating group upholstery composite materials by cigarette fire. The second part describes a test method for determining the flammability of furniture group upholstery composite materials with flammable sources.

Briefly, BS 5852 standard offers test methods for the use of upholstery composite materials. With these test methods, the ability of these materials to burn when exposed to a burning cigarette or a flaming object is evaluated. During the test, a gradual burning situation is observed, starting from the fabric surface or the interior of the upholstery filling. If the upholstery burns up or catches fire within an hour after quitting smoking, this product does not meet the standard.
