BS 7209 Test Standard for Properties of Water Vapor Permeable Garment Fabrics

The BS 7209 standard describes the requirements for two classes of fabrics suitable for the manufacture of water-resistant garments that allow water vapor to pass through. Definitions cover performance, sampling, selection of test specimens and suitability, marking, selection of test specimens, determination of water vapor permeability index, determination of resistance to water penetration after cleaning, resistance to water penetration after abrasion, resistance to water penetration.

Although the layer structure of knitted fabrics with improved biophysical properties is known, there is a lack of research comparing the effect of raw material and knitted fabric structure on biophysical properties, especially air and water vapor permeability.

This research, which this study aims to do, is necessary because of the wide variety of knitted fabrics. In addition, an attempt was made to correlate the bio-physical media permeability with surface porosity, a new knitted fabric structure parameter.

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between the resistance of fabrics to evaporative heat loss from the sweatproof hot plate (ISO 11092) and the water vapor permeability measured using the evaporative dish method (BS 7209).

Experimental correlation was investigated for multilayer systems consisting of air permeable fabrics, hybrid membrane containing microporous and hydrophilic components, and their combinations in accordance with Fick's Law, in order to cover as wide a breathability range as possible.

A mathematical relationship has been established between the two methods. Thus, the resistance to evaporated heat loss (Ret) measured by the evaporative dish method based on the water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) of the fabrics can be easily determined using a simple numerical method (bisection method, tangent method, etc.).
