The method uses an artificial perspiration solution to simulate the effect of human perspiration.
Because perspiration varies greatly from person to person, it is not possible to devise a method that is universally valid, but the alkaline artificial perspiration solution specified in ISO 11641 will in most cases produce results that correspond to natural perspiration.
