EN 196-1 Cement - Test Method for Determination of Strength

This part of the EN 196 standard describes the method for determining the compressive and optionally bending strength of cement mortar. The method is applied to ordinary cements and other cements and materials where standards require this method. For example, it may not be valid for other cement types with very short initial setting times.

The method is used to assess whether the compressive strength of cement complies with its specification and for verification testing of CEN Standard sand, EN 196 1 or alternative compaction equipment.

This part of EN 196 describes the reference equipment and procedure and allows the use of alternative compression equipment and procedures provided they have been validated in accordance with the appropriate provisions in this document. In case of dispute, only reference equipment and procedure are used.

Equipment will be rejected, adjusted or repaired when regular control measurements indicate that tolerances are not met. Records of control measurements will be kept. Acceptance measurements for new equipment shall include mass, volume and dimensions to the extent specified in this standard, with particular attention to critical dimensions for which tolerances are specified. Where the material of the equipment may affect the results, the material should be specified and used. Approximate dimensions shown in the figures are provided as a guide to equipment manufacturers or operators.
