ISO 4664 Rubber, Vulcanized or Thermoplastic, Standard Test for Determination of Dynamic Properties

It includes both free and forced vibration methods performed on both materials and products. It does not cover recoil resistance or cyclic testing where the main purpose is to tire the rubber.

Matter cannot be deformed without the application of force. Unlike elastic materials such as metals, rubber is a viscoelastic material, meaning it exhibits both an elastic response and a viscous resistance when deformed.

The viscoelastic properties are modeled as combinations of perfectly elastic springs and viscous dampers arranged in parallel (Voigt-Kelvin model) or series (Maxwell model), giving a qualitative model of the time dependent behavior of rubber-like materials.

The viscoelastic behavior of polymers is complex and results can be very sensitive to test conditions such as frequency, amplitude of applied force or deformation, test piece geometry and deformation mode, so these conditions must be carefully controlled if comparable results are to be obtained.
