DIN 51130 Test of Floor Coverings - Determination of Non-slip Feature - Working Rooms and Activity Areas with Slip Hazard - Walking Method - Ramp Test

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of DIN 51130 testing. This standard covers a method that can be used as a method of evaluating and classifying the slip resistance of floor coverings to be used in workplaces and working areas with slip hazard.

It also specifies a method of displacement volume of slabs with a profiled surface.

In Europe, the slip resistance test for the floor is prescribed by the German Normalization Institute (DIN) standard DIN 51130. A person wearing industrial-grade gear shoes walks facing downhill on a variable-angle ramp with the floor to be tested on.

The floor is covered with engine oil. The walker (without holding the handrails) sets the ramp angle to the highest value it can walk without slipping several times. The test is repeated with a second walker and the results are averaged.

As with tires, the tread is very useful in slippery conditions (for example, on a wet road or track). Due to heavy tread marks on the specified standard test shoes, the test tends to favor upholstery with a raised embossed profile or otherwise very rough surface and cannot be applied to shoes without strong treads.

In most cases, a better alternative to DIN 51130 is the pendulum DCOF test, which has been in use since 1971 and is a national standard in at least 50 countries.

The pendulum test uses a non-backed rubber slider (hard or soft rubber or both) and water as a lubricant. This represents much more everyday situations than DIN 51130. In addition, the pendulum test can be performed on-site installed or raised slabs for quality control. The DIN test can only be done in a laboratory.
