EN 10138 Test Standard for Prestressed Steels

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of EN 10138 standard. The EN 10138 standard specifies general requirements for high tensile steel products commonly used for the prestressing of concrete and also for other tensile applications such as ground anchors, force lifting, suspension and suspension ropes of bridges on the construction site.

EN 10138 Test Standard for Prestressed Steels

The standard only applies to products in condition supplied by the manufacturer. It is valid for all products within the scope of EN 10138 and other similar products related to other standards applied in accordance with the Construction Products Directive (CPD - 89/106/EEC). The rules underlying the current working procedure are in accordance with different official documents published by the European Commission, whose reference is cited.

The current operating procedure can be supplemented by other documents for internal use that are not subject to publication by the notified body responsible for the certification process.

Certification of Compliance Systems in the Field of CPD

The EN 10138 standard gives detailed information about the various attestation of conformity (AoC) systems in the context of the implementation of the CPD. It also addresses the relationship between AoC systems and notified bodies (NB). Clarifies the role of the relevant notified bodies under the different AoC systems.

The CPD defines a complete set of compliance verification systems that includes all actors with their roles and duties. Voluntary European or international standards may be used as a starting point where appropriate but are not mandatory.

The manufacturer is fully responsible for certifying that the products comply with the requirements of a technical specification. The involvement of a third party, even to provide an EC certificate of conformity, does not relieve the manufacturer of any obligation. However, under the CPD, responsibility for certain actions for all conformity verification systems (AoC) is entrusted to a third party.

All tests and procedures required by the CPD and technical specifications must be accurately performed and documented, with or without third party involvement in attestation of conformity. Documentation will be available to notifying authorities and supervisory authorities where relevant.

The test standard for EN 10138 prestressed steels is divided into five different sections:

EN 10138-1 - Prestressed Steels - Part 1: General Requirements

This part of the EN 10138 standard specifies general requirements for uncoated high tensile steel products commonly used for prestressing concrete as well as for other tensile applications in construction.

EN 10138-2 - Prestressed Steels - Part 2: Wire

This part of the EN 10138 standard specifies special requirements for a flat or recessed, stress-reduced high-tensile steel wire. It can be applied to wire that is straightened and stress relieved and supplied in coils from the same coil or in bundles in cut lengths.

EN 10138-3 - Prestressed Steels - Part 3: Wire

This part of the EN 10138 standard gives specific requirements for technical grades of stress relieving heat-treated high tensile steel wire wire.

EN 10138-4 - Prestressed Steels - Part 4: Bars

This part of the EN 10138 standard gives specific requirements for preferred sizes of round steel bars supplied in straight lengths, plain or ribbed and hot rolled or hot rolled and machined condition.

EN 10138-5 - Prestressed Steels - Part 5: Quenched and Tempered Wire

This part of the EN 10138 standard gives specific requirements for the technical grades of quenched and tempered high tensile steel wire wire.
