EN 1062-3 Paints and Varnishes - Test Standard for Coating Materials and Coating Systems for Exterior Wall and Concrete

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of EN 1062-3 standard. This European Standard specifies a method for determining the liquid water permeability of coatings, coating systems and related products intended for exterior masonry, and classification according to EN 1062-1.

EN 1062-3 Paints and Varnishes - Test Standard for Coating Materials and Coating Systems for Exterior Wall and Concrete

The method can be applied to coatings and coating systems on porous surfaces such as brick, concrete and plasters.

A liquid water permeability w above 0,5 kg/(m² xh) will not be measured accurately with the test method described in this standard.

Exterior wall coverings play an important role in preventing rainwater from seeping into porous mineral surfaces. For liquid water, this transfer rate is evaluated using blocks of highly porous mineral substrate covered with a coating or coating system on one of their faces. Test samples are immersed in water under controlled conditions and weighed at appropriate time intervals. Liquid water permeability is determined by the change in mass.

Appropriately sized container for deionized water or fresh tap water (drinking water) is provided with supports for test samples. Oven that can be stored at (50 ± 2) °C. A scale that can weigh between 2000 gr and 0,1 gr.

To determine the water permeability of a coating or coating system, a substrate with a bulky mineral substrate with a homogeneous surface with significantly higher water absorption than the coating or coating system to be tested should be used.

Samples cut from calcium silicate bricks, clay bricks or mortar slabs were found suitable for determining the liquid water permeability of coatings and coating systems for exterior wall and concrete. Unless otherwise agreed, such samples will be used as litter.

The samples will have a liquid water permeability coefficient w over 15148 kg/(m² xh) according to EN ISO 1. The surface area of the samples will be at least 200 cm² and the thickness will be at least 2,5 cm.
