EN 12004-2 Adhesives for Ceramic Tiles - Part 2: Test Methods

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of EN 12004-2 standard. This part of the EN EN 12004 standard covers methods for determining the properties of adhesives used in the interior and exterior installation of ceramic tiles. This European Standard also does not contain performance requirements or recommendations for the design and installation of ceramic tiles.

EN 12004-2 Adhesives for Ceramic Tiles - Part 2: Test Methods

In this part of the EN 12004 standard, the following test methods are described:

  • Determining the open time;
  • Determination of slip;
  • Determination of tensile bond strength for cementitious adhesives;
  • Determination of shear bond strength of dispersion adhesives;
  • Determination of shear bond strength of reaction resin adhesives;
  • Determination of transverse deformation of cementitious adhesives.

Ceramic tile adhesives can also be used for other types of tiles (natural and agglomerated stones, etc.) as long as they do not adversely affect the stones. This European Standard may contain dangerous substances and processes. Persons using this standard should be familiar with normal laboratory practice. This European Standard does not purport to address all, if any, safety problems associated with its use. It is the user's responsibility to establish appropriate safety and health practices and to ensure compliance with any European and national regulatory requirements.

Standard conditions are (23 ± 2) °C and (50 ± 5) % relative humidity, and the air velocity in the test area should be less than 0,2 m/s. The test should be performed within the specified time interval. All test materials should be conditioned for at least 24 hours under standard conditions. The adhesive to be tested must be within the shelf life where specified.

If a substrate for ceramic tile application has been recommended by the adhesive manufacturer, other substrates may be used upon agreement. To demonstrate compatibility with other optional substrates, the adhesive should be applied to the selected substrate in accordance with the open-time test method. The requirement is considered to be met when a result of 0,5 N/mm2 is obtained or when the substrate has cohesion failure.
