EN 12209 Building Hardware - Mechanically Operated Locks and Locking Plates - Requirements and Test Methods

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of EN 12209 standard. The EN 12209 standard covers the requirements and test methods for any mechanical lock or latch (including associated or separately supplied locking plates) intended for use on pedestrian doors in buildings, but excludes electro-mechanically actuated locks and strike plates, multi-point locks and locks.

EN 12209 Building Hardware - Mechanically Operated Locks and Locking Plates - Requirements and Test Methods

BS EN 12209 classifies mechanically actuated locks, latches and locking plates using an 11-digit coding system. This has proven necessary to provide an appropriate assessment of all the various characteristics of the products for specific markets in Europe.

It should be noted that some properties have been “doubled” to prevent further proliferation of boxes: for example, strength and durability at side load; door mass and closing force; corrosion resistance and temperature resistance.

The system is extensive, but has led to the use of letters (rather than numbers) in certain boxes, as each classification box can only have one number. A similar classification system is applied to all building hardware product standards (at least for the first 7 boxes) to aid meaningful comparisons with related products.

Mechanically actuated locks and latches intended for use on fire/smoke control doors within the EEA* are covered by the Construction Products Directive issued by the European Commission. As a result, this standard is considered “compliant” and compliance with it, supported by appropriate evidence, allows CE marking to be applied.
