ISO 3302-1 specifies dimensional tolerance classes and their values for molded, extruded and calendered solid rubber products. Relevant test methods required to ensure compliance with ISO 3302-1 are also specified.
Tolerances are primarily designed for use with vulcanized rubber but may also be suitable for products made from thermoplastic rubber.
ISO 3302-1 does not apply to precision toroidal seal rings or to burnished composite products such as rubber-coated fabrics, or products to which a rubber coating has been applied by a topcoat or peel-coat process.
For solid products, dimensional measurement will not be carried out until 16 hours after curing, in case of dispute this period is extended up to 72 hours. Measurements must be completed within 3 months from the date of shipment to the buyer or before the product is put into use, whichever is shorter. Measurements should be made at standard temperature after conditioning according to ISO 23529. Care should be taken that the products are not exposed to adverse storage conditions in accordance with ISO 2230 and that they do not deteriorate during measurement.
Extruded rubber products require greater tolerances in manufacturing than those produced by molding, as they are subject to mold swelling and shrinkage and deformation often occur during subsequent curing.
Deformation can be reduced by the use of supports during curing, the nature of the backing depending on the part produced, and the degree of control required. Such properties determine the tolerance class applicable to the given dimensions.
