EN 1230-2 Paper and Cardboard Intended for Food Contact, Sensory Analysis, Part 2: Odorless

This European standard specifies whether a paper or cardboard sample contains substances that may pass through the air gap to a test substance and affect its taste.

It can be applied to all types of paper and cardboard, including coated and printed materials intended to come into contact with foodstuffs. It does not apply to the determination of consumer preference.

The stain test is valid for evaluating whether the material to be tested will cause a change in the taste (taste) of the food that will come into contact with the material.

The test serves to assess possible off-flavors from a paper and cardboard intended for food packaging or otherwise in contact with foodstuffs. According to the results, conclusions can be drawn about the suitability of the tested material for packaging of foodstuffs.

Three alternative test procedures are described for the evaluation of the test substance:

• Triangle test;
• Extended triangle test;
• Multiple comparison test.

It is recommended to use the triangle test when grading of the defect density is not required. This test is less affected by the presence of atypical data than the multiple comparison test.

Multiple comparison testing may be preferred in situations where large numbers of samples are to be tested, as this procedure takes less time compared to triangle tests. It is also the most common sensory test for the evaluation of paper and cardboard. The method is statistically less efficient than the triangle test.
