EN 196-5 Cement - Pozzolanicity Test for Pozzolanic Cement

This European Standard specifies the method for measuring the pozzolanicity of pozzolanic cements conforming to EN 197-1. This standard does not apply to Portland posing cements or puzzolans.

EN 196-5 Cement - Pozzolanicity Test for Pozzolanic Cement

Pozzolanicity is evaluated by comparing the concentration of calcium ion, expressed as calcium oxide, in the aqueous solution in contact with hydrated cement after a fixed time with the amount of calcium ion that can saturate the same solution. Cement is considered to meet the test, that is, it gives a positive result if the calcium ion concentration in the solution is lower than the saturation concentration.

The main purpose of EN 196-5 is to evaluate the pozzolanic activity of the pozzolanic materials in cement and to ensure that these materials contribute to the strength and durability of the cement when reacted with calcium hydroxide. This is particularly important for cements used in construction projects where long-term durability and strength are critical.

The standard describes a method that involves preparing a mortar mixture containing cement, sand and water to be tested. This mixture is then subjected to certain conditions under which the pozzolanic reaction can occur. The strength of the mortar is measured after a certain curing period, usually 28 days, and compared with the strength of the control mortar made with reference cement and without the pozzolanic material.

The strength difference between the test mortar and the reference mortar indicates the pozzolanic activity level of the tested cement. The higher strength of the test mortar compared to the reference mortar indicates higher pozzolanic activity.

This standard is used by cement manufacturers, testing laboratories and research institutions to evaluate the pozzolanic activity of cements. It is crucial for the development and quality control of pozzolanic cements to ensure their suitability for intended applications in construction.
