EN 843-2 Advanced Technical Ceramics - Test for Determination of Poisson Ratio

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of EN 843-2 testing. This standard specifies methods for determining the elastic modulus of advanced monolithic technical ceramics at room temperature, in particular Young's modulus, shear modulus, and Poisson's ratio.

EN 843-2 Advanced Technical Ceramics - Test for Determination of Poisson Ratio

This European Standard prescribes four alternative methods for determining some or all of these three parameters:

  • Determination of Young's modulus by static bending of a thin beam in three- or four-point bending.
  • Determination of Young's modulus by forced longitudinal resonance or Young's modulus, shear modulus and Poisson's ratio by forced bending and torsional resonance of a thin beam.
  • Determination of Young's modulus, shear modulus and Poisson's ratio from the time of flight of an ultrasonic pulse.
  • Determination of Young's modulus from the fundamental natural frequency of the beat bar (impulse excitation method).

All test methods assume the use of homogeneous test pieces of linear elastic materials.

Not all ceramic materials, such as some porous materials and some piezoelectric materials, are uniformly and linearly elastic in tension and compression. Except for Method C, the test assumes that the test piece has isotropic elastic properties. Method C can be used to determine the degree of anisotropy by testing in different directions.

At high levels of porosity, all methods except Method C may become unsuitable. The methods are suitable for a maximum grain size of less than 10% of the minimum size of the test piece, excluding deliberately added whiskers.

Different methods given in this European Standard may produce slightly different results on the same material due to differences between semi-isothermal, semi-static and semi-isothermal.
