ISO 974 Plastics, Standard Test for Determination of Fragility Temperature by Impact

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ISO 974 standard. This International standard specifies a method for determining the temperature at which plastics that are not rigid at normal ambient temperature exhibit brittle fracture under specified impact conditions.

ISO 974 Plastics, Standard Test for Determination of Fragility Temperature by Impact

A complementary technique using notched samples develops brittleness values at a much higher temperature than that observed for unnotched samples of the same plastic material. The method uses a statistical technique to measure the brittle fracture temperature.

Provisions were made for testing sufficient samples to allow for statistical calculation of the brittle temperature.

The method determines the temperature with a 50% probability of failure for both unnotched and notched specimens. While this method does not necessarily measure the lowest temperature at which the material can be used, it has been found useful for specification purposes.
