This European standard specifies a method for determining the loss of dry mass of sludges and sludge products upon ignition at 12880°C, after dry residues have been determined according to the EN 550 method.
Dried sludge samples are heated in an oven at (550±25)°C. The mass difference before and after ignition is used to calculate the ignition loss.
There is normally no interference with the loss of ignition determination. However, for many purposes this determination is used as an assessment of the organic portion of the dry mass of the sludge. In this case, loss of volatile inorganic substances may occur, which gives high results.

Exploding glass bottles containing mud can produce microorganism-contaminated shrapnel. Plastic bottles can also explode and produce a dangerous spray and aerosol.
