EN 12952-1 General Requirements for Water Tube Boilers and Auxiliary Facilities

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of EN 12952 standard. This part of the EN 12952 standard applies to water-tube boilers with a volume exceeding two liters for the production of steam and/or hot water at a maximum allowable pressure PS above 0,5 bar and at a temperature exceeding 110 °C, as well as to auxiliary installations ( other plant equipment).

EN 12952-1 General Requirements for Water Tube Boilers and Auxiliary Facilities

The purpose of this European Standard is to ensure that the essential safety requirements are fulfilled according to the Pressure Equipment Directive to guarantee the safety of water tube boilers. For this purpose:

  • Appropriate application of design, manufacturing, testing and inspection methods and techniques,
  • Providing protective measures against hazards that cannot be eliminated and
  • This includes providing information on residual hazards and other measures to reduce risk.

The requirements of this European Standard take into account the pressure-related hazards applied to water tube boilers, including failure of pressure holding components due to overheating. This standard recognizes that it is not possible to cover all possible combinations of situations.

Boiler Installation

For the purposes of this European Standard, boiler installation includes:

  • Flange at the bottom of the water tube boiler or outlet header containing all the pressure parts from the feed water inlet (including the inlet valve) to the steam and/or hot water outlet (including the outlet valve or, if there is no valve, including the first peripheral source)
  • All superheaters, reheaters, economizers that cannot be isolated from the main system by putting shut-off valves, related safety accessories and interconnection pipes
  • In addition, up to and including the first isolation valve in the pipeline downstream of the boiler, discharge, ventilation, desuperheating, etc. pipes connected to the boiler in the services
  • Re-heaters independently fired and supplied separately with safety accessories including all control and safety systems

The following equipment and components may be integrated into the assembly at the manufacturer's discretion:

  • Insulating superheaters, reheaters, economizers and associated interconnecting pipes;
  • heat source or ignition system;
  • Ways of preparing fuel and feeding it to the boiler, including control systems;
  • means of supplying feed water to the boiler, including the control system;
  • Pressure expansion vessels and tanks of the hot water production plant.

Other Plant Equipment

  • Boiler supporting structural steel structure, thermal insulation and/or brick and casing;
  • means of supplying air to the boiler, including forced draft fans and air preheaters heated by combustion gases;
  • Facilities for transporting flue gases from the boiler to the flue inlet, including induced draft fans and air pollution reducing equipment in the flue gas discharge path;
  • All other equipment necessary for the operation of the boiler plant.

This European Standard does not apply to the following types of boiler plants:

  • Boilers other than fixed boilers;
  • Shell type boilers;
  • Nuclear primary circuits, the failure of which can cause emission of radioactivity;
  • electric boilers;
