This part of this European Standard provides guidance for the selection of suitable contact conditions of food simulants with the test article before determining the specific migration of those substances subject to a migration limit.
It is allowed to determine the migration of the specified ingredients in foodstuffs instead of the use of similar substances. In this case, however, there is no need to provide guidance on time and temperature test conditions, as the contact conditions will be equal to those actually applied. In addition, general guidance is given for determining the amount of substance in the final plastic material or article.
Organic macromolecular compounds, silicones and other macromolecular compounds obtained by polymerization, polycondensation, polyaddition or any similar process from molecules of lower molecular weight or by chemically altering natural molecules should also be considered plastic. Other substances may be added to such compounds.
