The European standard EN 13322-1 includes specifications for the design and manufacture of refillable and portable, welded steel gas cylinders, and provides a test method for determining these properties. This standard includes minimum requirements on certain issues related to material, design, construction and workmanship, procedure and testing in the production of refillable welded steel gas cylinders with water capacities from 0,5 to 150 liters for compressed, liquefied or dissolved gases.

Additional requirements for the cylinder used in acetylene service and the basic requirements for porous mass are included in the EN 1800 standard (TS EN 1800 Portable gas cylinders - Acetylene cylinders - Basic features and definitions).

Requirements for cylinders made of high frequency induction welded steel pipes are given in the standard annex. This standard is primarily for industrial gases other than LPG, but can also be applied to LPG. However, EN 1442 standard is applied for special LPG cylinders (TS EN 1442 Tubes - For liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) - Portable - Refillable - Steel, welded - Design and manufacturing). Another European standard applied in this regard is the "CEN / TC 286 Liquefied petroleum gas equipment and accessories" standard.

Generally, gas cylinders are pressure vessels used to store and store gases under pressure above atmospheric pressure. Depending on the physical properties of the contents stored in the cylinder, a compressed gas can be in the form of vapor on liquid, supercritical liquid, or dissolved in a substrate material. In this context, the expression cylinder should not be confused with the tank. Tanks are an open top or vented container that stores liquids.

In most cases, gas cylinders made of alloy structural steel are used. Such materials have mechanical properties such as tensile strength and plastic strength, so they can be reused many times.

In short, portable and refillable gas cylinders used for compressed, liquefied or dissolved gases should be designed, manufactured and used in accordance with the requirements that do not endanger the safety of people, property and environment. At the same time, this equipment must comply with the relevant legal regulations and national and international standards. This is the main purpose of the tests performed in advanced laboratories.

Steels produced with various elements that are essentially added to iron are divided into various classes with certain properties. Stainless steel and carbon steel are the most commonly used types. There is at least 10,5 percent chromium element in the content of stainless steel. In the content of carbon steel, there is at most 2 percent carbon. Carbon steels are divided into low, medium and high carbon types depending on the carbon content they contain. High carbon steels contain more than 0,60 percent carbon content. These are steels with high strength and low ductility. In this respect, it is a wear-resistant and hard material and is preferred in the production of portable and refillable steel gas cylinders.
