EN 13468 Thermal Insulation Products for Building Equipment and Industrial Facilities - Determination of Trace Water-Soluble Chloride, Fluoride, Silicate, Sodium Ions and pH

The EN 13468 standard covers equipment and procedures for the determination of trace amounts of water-soluble chloride, fluoride, silicate and sodium ions in an aqueous extract of the product. It also describes a procedure for determining the pH of the aqueous extract. The standard can be applied to thermal insulation products.

The determination of these parameters may relate to thermal insulation products intended to be applied to stainless austenitic steel surfaces. The presence of chloride, fluoride, silicate and sodium ions under certain conditions can affect the risk of stress corrosion cracking.

Test samples of the insulating product are boiled or heated in deionized water to filter out the soluble ions. Tests to identify water-soluble chloride, fluoride, silicate and sodium ions are performed on aliquots of the filtered aqueous extract. A pH value is determined on one of the aliquots.

All equipment and work tools used for this purpose must be free of soluble chloride, fluoride, silicate, sodium ions and oil. Non-chlorine solvents will be used to clean equipment and work tools (avoid chlorinated solvents). Foreign sources of these ions will be reduced or eliminated during the execution of the analytical procedure.
