EN 13480 Test Standard for Metallic Industrial Piping

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of EN 13480 standard. The EN 13480 standard defines requirements for the design, manufacture, assembly, testing and inspection of industrial piping systems and supports, including safety systems made of metallic materials (but initially limited to steel) to ensure safe operation. EN 13480 is applicable to above-ground, ducted or buried metallic pipes, regardless of pressure.

EN 13480 Test Standard for Metallic Industrial Piping

This European Standard does not apply to:

  • Pipelines and accessories;
  • Stream waterways such as penstocks, pressure tunnels, pressure shafts for hydro-electric installations and their special accessories;
  • piping for vehicles covered by EEC type-approval procedures as specified in Directives 70/156/EEC [1], 74/150/EEC [2] and 92/61/EEC;
  • Items specially designed for nuclear use, the failure of which may cause emission of radioactivity;
  • Well control equipment used in the oil, gas or geothermal exploration and extraction industry and underground storage intended to contain and/or control well pressure, including piping;
  • Blast furnace tubes including furnace cooling, hot air recuperators, dust absorbers and blast furnace exhaust scrubbers and direct reduction cupolas including furnace cooling, gas converters and vacuum furnaces and pans and iron for smelting, remelting degassing and steel casting non-metals;
  • High voltage electrical equipment enclosures such as switchgear, control gear and transformers;
  • Pressure pipes for the containment of electrical power and transmission systems such as telephone cables;
  • Permanently fixed pipes for ships, rockets, aircraft and mobile offshore units;
  • Internal piping in medical devices as defined in Directive 93/142/EEC on medical devices [4];
  • Internal piping of boilers and piping integrated into pressure vessels.

The manufacturer is responsible for the execution of all relevant production processes and the tests specified in the relevant standards. The person or organization that takes full responsibility for the design and manufacture of the piping system and its compliance with EN 13480 must have this test done.

The EN 13480 standard consists of the following parts:

  • EN 13480-1 Industrial Metallic Pipes - Part 1: General
  • EN 13480-2 Industrial Metallic Pipes - Part 2: Materials
  • EN 13480-3 Industrial Metallic Pipes - Part 3: Design and Calculation
  • EN 13480-4 Industrial Metallic Pipes - Part 4: Manufacturing and Assembly
  • EN 13480-5 Industrial Metallic Pipes - Part 5: Inspection and Tests
  • EN 13480-6 Metallic Industrial Piping - Part 6: Additional Requirements for Buried Piping
  • EN 13480-8 Industrial Piping of Metals - Part 8: Additional Requirements for Aluminum and Aluminum Alloy Piping
