EN 13501 Part 3: Classification of Data from Fire Resistance Tests on Products and Elements Used in Building Service Facilities

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of EN 13501-3 standard. This part of the 13501 standard is based on the classification of data obtained from fire resistance tests on products and structural elements used in buildings. Especially fire resistant air ducts and fire dampers are classified according to this standard.

EN 13501 Part 3: Classification of Data from Fire Resistance Tests on Products and Elements Used in Building Service Facilities

During the fire resistance and non-flammability tests of the building elements, the behavior of the building elements is determined by exposing them to a certain temperature that represents a fire in a normally closed area. Fire resistance is one of the various properties of a building element, not just a property of specific materials used in building products. These structural elements are then classified in terms of their respective fire reaction.

A few other standards to consider in the application of this standard are:

  • EN 1366-1 Fire resistance tests for service installations Part 1: Ventilation ducts
  • EN 1366-2 Fire resistance tests - Service fire resistance tests - Service installations - Part 2: Fire dampers
  • EN 15725 Extended application reports on the flame performance of building products and building elements
  • EN ISO 13943 Fire safety - Terms and definitions (ISO 13943:2017)

The purpose of this standard is to define a harmonized procedure for the fire resistance classification of building products and elements. This classification is based on test procedures and the relevant application procedures area.

This standard has been prepared in support of the second essential requirement in the EC Construction Products Directive (2/2), which is detailed in Interpretive Document number 62 (ID37): Safety in the event of fire (OJ C305 Volume 2011). Reflects Commission Decision (EU) 20XX/XXX of DD MM 20XX regarding the classification of fire resistance performance of construction products, works and parts thereof. DD MM 20XX specifies performance and classes related to fire resistance. These classes are identified by designation letters, each of which denotes an important characteristic of fire resistance behavior.

This standard provides a common understanding for these requirements. Interprets the functional requirements for different groups of building products and elements and explains the method of deriving their classification on the basis of test results and/or extended application results for individual products or elements.
