EN 1423 Road marking Materials - Falling Materials - Glass Beads, Non-Slip Aggregates and Mixtures of the Two

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of EN 1423 standard. The EN 1423 standard provides for glass beads applied as dripping materials on road marking products (i.e. paints, cold plastics and thermoplastics), anti-slip
Specifies the requirements applicable to preventive aggregates and a mixture of the two.

EN 1423 Road marking Materials - Falling Materials - Glass Beads, Non-Slip Aggregates and Mixtures of the Two

Glass beads and/or anti-slip aggregates or their mixture applied in the manufacturing process of other road marking products are not covered by this European Standard.

Glass beads are transparent spherical glass particles used to provide night vision for road signs by reflecting a vehicle's incoming headlight beams back towards the driver.

This product is defined by five characteristics: refractive index, maximum weight percent of defective glass beads, granulometry, hazardous substance content, and resistance to chemicals. In addition, the surface treatment must be declared by the manufacturer, if any, together with the intended use.

Moisture Resistant Coating

Moisture resistant coating is added to prevent the glass bead from absorbing moisture from the air. When tested, the presence of the damp proof coating must be declared as Pass or Fail.

Flotation Coating

The flotation coating is essentially added to the glass beads to allow the beads to float (and therefore not penetrate too much) when dropped on road marking materials in the liquid phase. When tested, the presence of the buoyancy coating must be declared as Pass or Fail.

Adhesion Coating

The adhesive coating is added to provide higher adhesion between the binder and the glass beads when dropped on road marking materials. When the manufacturer declares the presence of an adhesive coating on the glass beads, they will be tested according to a test method recommended by the manufacturer. The presence of the coating will be declared as “Passed” or “Failed”.

Glass beads or anti-slip aggregates applied in the manufacturing process of other road marking products, or a mixture thereof, are not covered by this European Standard.
