Thick bed installations are based on the traditional method of packing a bed of mortar onto a surface before laying the tile. The tile is bonded to the mortar bed when the mortar bed is green (just starting to dry) or after the mortar bed has cured.
The mortar bed can be wire-reinforced and either placed on a cleavage membrane (allowing the mortar bed to "float" through the substrate) or adhered to the substrate; hence the use of the terms "floating mortar bed" or "attached mortar bed" for masonry applications the metal lath is mechanically fixed to the substrate and locked to the metal lath as the mortar cures. The terms thick bed installation, mortar bed installation and thick dam installation are synonymous.
