EN 12469 Biotechnology - Performance Criteria for Microbiological Safety Cabinets

This European standard specifies minimum performance criteria for safety cabinets for working with microorganisms and specifies test procedures for microbiological safety cabinets for worker and environmental protection, product protection and cross-contamination.

Mechanical, electrical, chemical or radioactive safety measures are not included in the standard, but are covered by EN 610101-1, EN 292-1 and EN 292-2.

This European standard does not cover safety measures not related to the use of microorganisms, such as those covering mechanical and electrical hazards covered in EN 61010-1, and safety requirements for flammable and inert gases.

Microbiological safety cabinets aim to reduce the risk to the operator while handling dangerous or potentially dangerous microorganisms. They do not necessarily protect the operator from all associated hazards. Some types of safety cabinets can also protect the materials handled in them from environmental contamination.
