EN 13238 Reaction to Fire Tests for Building Products

This European Standard covers:

• Pre-drying of test samples for flammability test according to EN ISO 1182;
• Methods of cleaning (e.g. washing) and other methods for assessing durability aspects, which are covered in the relevant product standards.

The Building Materials Directive requires products to be tested under end-use conditions, which can lead to a wide variety of economically unrealistic tests on substrates. This broad spectrum has been reduced to a practical number of standard substrates allowing most end-use conditions to be represented.

Before commencing conditioning for a fixed period, test specimens should be properly cured and free of excess water according to the manufacturer's instructions. Excess water content should be measured and should be below 40% before test samples are placed in the conditioning medium.

Surfaces used by the laboratory to perform tests in accordance with EN ISO 9239-1, EN ISO 11925-2, EN 13823 and EN 14390 should be evaluated, where appropriate, to determine their reaction-to-fire test performance and therefore their compliance with this standard.
