ISO/TS 11405 provides guidance on substrate selection, storage and processing, as well as the key features of the different test methods for quality testing of the adhesive bond between restorative dental materials and tooth structure, namely enamel and dentin. It includes a tensile bond strength measurement test, a test for measuring marginal voids around sealants, a microleak test, and provides guidance on clinical use testing for such materials.

Specific specifications for substrate selection, storage and handling are detailed. General guidelines are given for the apparatus used in bond strength measurements. It is not the goal to recommend testing every material in every test, as some tests will not be appropriate. However, the quality and complexity of a laboratory test cannot compensate for the fact that the ultimate proof of adhesive properties must be a clinical use test.
