EN 14885 Chemical Disinfectants and Antiseptics - Application of European Standards for Chemical Disinfectants and Antiseptics

This European Standard specifies the European Standards that products must comply with in order to support the microbicidal activity claims referred to in this European Standard. This European Standard also specifies the terms and definitions used in the European Standards.

It applies to products to be used in the field of human medicine, veterinary and food, industrial, domestic and institutional areas. It applies to chemical disinfectants and antiseptics to be used in the field of human medicine, in areas and situations where disinfection or antisepsis is medically indicated.

It can be applied to products with claimed effectiveness against the following microorganisms:

• Vegetative bacteria (including mycobacteria and Legionella);
• bacterial spores;
• Mayans;
• Fungal spores;
• Viruses.

This standard aims to:

• Enabling product manufacturers to select the appropriate standards to be used to provide data that supports their claims for a particular product;
• To enable users of the product to evaluate the information provided by the manufacturer regarding the intended use of the product;
• Assist regulatory authorities in evaluating claims made by the manufacturer or the person responsible for placing the product on the market.

It is applicable to chemical disinfectants and antiseptics to be used in the veterinary field, animal breeding, breeding, veterinary care facilities, production, transportation and disposal. It does not apply to chemical disinfectants used in the food chain following death and entry into the processing industry. It applies to chemical disinfectants and antiseptics to be used in the processing, distribution and retail sale of foods of animal or vegetable origin in food, industrial, domestic and institutional areas.
