EN 15343 Plastic Recycling Traceability and Compliance and Evaluation of Recycled Content

Nearly every plastic product you buy has numbers and letters inside the recycling symbol on its packaging. These icons, which differ according to the type of resin in the plastic, are called plastic identification codes. The recycling symbol in the plastic identification code may create a perception that all plastics can be easily recycled, but this is not true. Some plastics decompose more difficult than others and are recycled.

Plastic does not rot, rust, dissolve and deteriorate when thrown away. In addition to polluting water and soil, it accumulates in nature for years, harming aquatic creatures and even causing their death.

Therefore, these plastics accumulating in nature need to be disposed of. Recyclable wastes such as glass, metal, plastic and paper/cardboard can be transformed into a new raw material or product by undergoing various physical and chemical processes. The introduction of these wastes into the production process as a second raw material after undergoing some processes is called recycling.

This standard is valid without prejudice to any existing legislation. While procedures are needed to formulate or explain traceability, traceability can be used as a basis for calculating recycled content.
