EN ISO 4628-1 Paints and Varnishes - Evaluation of Deterioration of Coatings - Part 1: General Identification and Nomenclature System

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of EN ISO 4628-1 standard. This part of the International Standard EN ISO 4628 defines a system for determining the amount and size of defects and the intensity of changes in the appearance of coatings, and outlines the general principles of the system used in ISO 4628. This system is particularly applicable to uniform changes such as yellowing and imperfections due to aging and weathering.

Other parts of ISO 4628 provide pictorial standards or other tools for assessing certain types of defects. As far as possible, already existing assessment schemes were used as the basis. ISO 4628-1 is also used to evaluate defects not covered in other parts of ISO 4628.

A uniform convention has been adopted to determine the amount and size of defects and the intensity of changes by grading on a numerical scale ranging from 0 to 5, with 0 indicating no defects or changes, and 5 indicating defects or changes so severe that it is unreasonable to further distinguish. Other ratings corresponding to the numbers 1, 2, 3, and 4 are defined to provide optimum discrimination across the entire range of the scale.

The use of intermediate half-steps is permitted, if specified, to provide a more detailed report of observed defects or changes. The amount of small defects scattered in the test area can be evaluated by a grid method. In addition to the ratings, the approximate dimensions of the relevant area or the ratio of the relevant area to the total area will be expressed as a percentage.

The amount of defects in the form of cuts or other local defects in the coating is more or less evenly distributed over the test area and is determined by number grading. Expressed as an integer unless otherwise stated. The mean size (order of magnitude) of defects is determined by number grading if necessary and is meaningful.

Where a test area exhibits defects of various sizes, the size of the largest defects, large enough to be typical of the test area, shall be indicated as a size rating. The size of the defect will be reported using the definition Sn where S represents the size and n represents the rating number. For example, a defect that can only be seen with normal corrected vision is defined as S2.

Among the services provided by our organization within the framework of material testing services, there are also EN ISO 4628-1 standard tests. Do not hesitate to contact our laboratory EUROLAB for your testing and certification requests.
