ISO 179-2 Plastics - Determination of Charpy Impact Properties - Instrument Impact Test

This standard specifies a method for determining the Charpy impact properties of plastics from force deflection diagrams. Different types of rod-shaped test specimens and test configurations are defined in ISO 179-1, as well as test parameters depending on the type of material, the type of test specimen and the type of notch.

ISO 179-2 Plastics - Determination of Charpy Impact Properties - Instrument Impact Test

Dynamic effects such as load cell-impact resonance, test sample resonance, and initial contact-inertia peaks are described in this standard.

ISO 179-1 is suitable for characterizing impact behavior by impact strength only, and for using apparatus whose potential energy is approximately matched to the fracture energy to be measured. This standard is used to record a force-deflection or force-time diagram for detailed characterization of impact behavior and to develop automatic apparatus, ie avoiding the need to match energy.

The method described in this standard is also suitable for:

  • To obtain more and different material properties under impact conditions;
  • Supervision of the Charpy test procedure, as this instrumentation enables the detection of typical operational errors, eg not in close contact with supports;
  • Automatic detection of breakage type;
  • Pendulum type tools to avoid frequent replacement of pendulum hammers;
  • Measurement of fracture mechanical properties defined in other ISO standards.

Information about the typical behavior of materials can be obtained by testing at different temperatures, varying the radius of notch or sample thickness, and testing samples prepared under different conditions.

It is not the purpose of this standard to give an interpretation of the mechanism that occurs at each point of the force deviation diagram. These comments are a task for ongoing scientific research.

Test results obtained by this method can only be compared if the test specimen preparation conditions as well as the test conditions are the same. Therefore, the impact behavior of finished products cannot be directly predicted from this test.
