After preparation, the samples are placed and centered on the roller of a compression testing machine, as needed. A uniformly distributed load is applied and increased continuously until failure.
Samples will be tested in the specified direction and this will be stated in the test report. For certain forms of construction it will be necessary to test wall units in more than one direction. Where grinding significantly changes the contact surface or significantly reduces the height, alternative approaches are required.
After removing any excess material, eg. The faces of the sample flashing from the manufacturing process, through which the load will be applied, must be flat with a tolerance of 0,1 mm, whether it is an entire wall unit or a piece cut from a larger unit. If the test faces of the wall unit as manufactured or the part cut from a larger unit fail to meet this specification, prepare the surfaces by either grinding or sealing.
Samples should be conditioned using a predetermined regime of moisture conditions or, as appropriate, to a predetermined moisture condition. The conditioning method will be as described in this article. In all cases, except for immersion conditioning, free air circulation should be maintained around each sample during conditioning.
Wipe clean the bearing surfaces of the testing machine and remove any loose sand from the specimen bearing surfaces. Carefully align the sample with the center of the ball seat plate so that a proper fit is achieved. Single frog units should be placed with the frog on top. Units with frogs on both bearing faces should be placed with the larger frog on top.
