The obtained values are not intended to be used in test reports as a statement of the accuracy of actual measurements. Reference to this International Standard may only be made if the test conditions or instrumentation meet the requirements specified herein.
It is not possible to fully state the construction of laboratory testing facilities or the robust field conditions achieved. Therefore, some details regarding the test setup and procedure should be left to the operator's discretion. This, together with the statistical character of sound fields in rooms, leads to uncertainties in the results due to unsystematic (random) and systematic effects.
Random effects can be determined by repeated measurements under essentially similar conditions; Changes are made to obtain representative examples of actually existing conditions (e.g., location of speaker and microphone). The resulting repeatability is a measure of the confidence in the results relative to random effects.
Systematic effects (e.g. size and shape of test chambers, mounting conditions of the test sample, calibration of measurement equipment) cannot be determined by a simple procedure. In general, comparative measurements in different test setups and knowledge of random uncertainties under these conditions are necessary to evaluate systematic effects.
Consistent with modern statistical methods, this International Standard uses the concepts of repeatability and reproducibility of exact results L rather than the variance of the individual quantities that make up the result. Repeatability and reproducibility provide a simple means of checking and specifying the accuracy of measurements.
