This standard specifies a method for the determination of the bulk density of hardened mortars. It can be applied to light and general purpose and thin-bedded mortars using normal shaped specimens.

EN 1015-10 Test Methods for Masonry Mortar, Part 10: Standard Test for Determination of Dry Bulk Density of Hardened Mortar

The dry bulk density of a given hardened mortar sample is determined by the ratio of its kiln-dried mass and the volume it occupies.

Fresh mortar for this test shall have a volume of not less than 50 times the maximum aggregate particle size and in no case less than 50 ml or 1,5 times the amount required to carry out the test, whichever is greater.

It will be achieved either by reducing the bulk test sample using a sample divider, or by quartering it or preparing it in the laboratory from dry ingredients and water. The flow value of the mortar in the poured test sample should be determined and reported according to EN 1015-3.
