EN ISO 527-2 Determination of Tensile Properties of Plastics, Test Conditions for Molding and Extrusion Plastics

The ISO 527-2 standard, published by the International Standards Organization (ISO), includes a test method for determining the tensile properties of molding and extrusion plastics based on the general principles given in the first part of this standard. In our country, this standard has been published by the Turkish Standards Institute (TSE) with the following title: TS EN ISO 527-2 Plastics - Determination of tensile properties - Part 2: Test conditions for molding and extrusion plastics.

EN ISO 527-2 Determination of Tensile Properties of Plastics, Test Conditions for Molding and Extrusion Plastics

The test methods in this standard are suitable for use with the following materials:

  • Rigid and semi-rigid thermoplastic molding, extrusion and casting materials, including compounds filled and reinforced with short fibers, small rods, plates or granules, but excluding textile fibers
  • Rigid and semi-rigid thermosetting molding and casting materials (including filled and reinforced compounds, but excluding textile fibers as reinforcement)
  • Thermotropic liquid crystal polymers

These test methods are not normally suitable for use with rigid cellular materials or sandwich structures containing cellular material. Rigid cellular materials are subject to the ISO 1926 standard. In addition, these methods are not suitable for flexible films and sheets with a thickness of less than 1 mm.

These test methods are applied using specimens that can be molded to selected sizes or machined, cut or punched from injection or compression molded plates.

The EN ISO 527-2 standard, which is a basic European standard, is an international standard for determining the tensile properties of reinforced plastics. In fact, this standard provides results similar to the ASTM D638 standard developed by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) (ASTM D638-14 Standard test method for tensile properties of plastics). However, the ISO 527-2 standard is not technically considered equivalent to the ASTM D638 standard due to differences in sample size and testing requirements.

While some large multinational manufacturers use the test methods presented in both the ASTM D638 standard and the ISO 527-2 standard, most customers prefer one standard or the other based on their geographic location. For example, North American manufacturers usually test the ASTM D638 standard, while manufacturers in Europe and Asia first test the ISO 527-2 standard. Companies in China test both ASTM D638 and ISO 527-2 standards equally.

Tests in the framework of the ISO 527-2 standard are carried out on a testing machine by applying a tensile force to a sample and measuring the various properties of the sample material under tension. The test is carried out at strain rates ranging from 1 to 500 mm / min until the sample fails in yield or fracture.

Although many different tensile properties are measured with these tests, the most common are:

  • Tensile strength (the amount of force that can be applied to a material before it stretches or breaks)
  • Tensile strength (how much a material can deform in response to stress before stretching)
  • Elongation (gauge length increase after fracture divided by original gauge length)
  • Poisson's ratio (a measure of the relationship between how much a material is stretched and how thin it is during the stretching process)

Briefly, there are many different test methods for various types of plastic. The ISO 527-2 test method is designed for testing hard and semi-rigid plastics, whether molded, extruded, machined or cast. This method also applies to reinforced plastics).

Our organization, among numerous testing, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, within the framework of national and international standards, to determine the tensile properties of plastics within the scope of EN ISO 527-2 standard, for molding and extrusion plastics. provides testing services.
