The tests can be defined as tensile tests at relatively high strain rates. These methods can be used for rigid materials (as defined in ISO 472), but are particularly useful for materials that are too flexible or too thin to be tested with impact tests to ISO 179 or ISO 180.
These methods are used to investigate the behavior of specified samples under specified impact velocities and to estimate the brittleness or toughness of samples within the limitations inherent in the test conditions.
These methods can be applied both to samples prepared from molding materials and to samples from finished or semi-finished products (eg moulds, films, laminates or extruded or cast sheets).
Results obtained by testing molded specimens of different sizes may not necessarily be the same. Likewise, samples cut from molded products may not produce the same results as samples of the same dimensions molded directly from the material. Test results from samples prepared from molding compounds cannot be directly applied to molds of any shape because values may depend on molding design and molding conditions. Results obtained with method A and method B may or may not be comparable.
These methods are not suitable for use as data sources for design calculations on components. However, information about the typical behavior of a material can be obtained by testing different types of test specimens prepared under different conditions and testing them at different temperatures. The two different methods are suitable for production control as well as quality control.
