EN 16190 Soil, Treated Biowaste and Sludge - Determination of Dioxins and Furans and Dioxin-Like Polychlorinated Biphenyls by Gas Chromatography with High Resolution Mass Selective Detection (HR GC-MS)

This draft European Standard specifies a method for the quantitative determination of 17 2,3,7,8-chlorine-substituted dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofuran and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls in sludge, treated biowaste and soil using liquid column chromatographic purification methods.

The detection limit depends on the type of sample, its homogeneity, the equipment used, and the quality of the chemicals used for extraction and cleaning. Under the conditions specified in this European Standard, detection limits of better than 1 ng/kg (expressed as dry matter) can be achieved.

This method is performance based. Modification of the method is allowed if all the performance criteria given in this method are met. In principle, this method can also be applied to sediments, mineral wastes and vegetation. It is the responsibility of the user of this European Standard to verify the application for these matrices. Further improvement of cleanliness may be required to measure complex matrices such as fly ash adsorbed on vegetation. This may also apply to sediments and mineral wastes.
