EN 1773 Width and Length Determination Test Standard for Textiles

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of EN 1773 standard. The EN 1773 standard defines a test method for determining the length and width of textile fabrics in the relaxed state obtained by relieving the tension applied in the standard atmosphere for textile products.

EN 1773 Width and Length Determination Test Standard for Textiles

This test method is applied to textile fabrics of full width, folded vertically in the middle or tubular, but not longer than 100 meters. This standard is not a method to identify or explain construction or other defects. In addition, this standard does not apply to coated fabrics.

The usable width of a fabric is the measured length between the warp thread on the left edge and the warp thread on the right edge, minus the hem. The actual piece of material may be wider than the usable portion, but most manufacturers provide the usable width instead of the actual width.

Fabric width varies according to the manufacturer and fabric type. There is no standard width value for all fabric types. Generally, however, similar fabrics tend to have similar widths.

While testing, a textile fabric sample conditioned in a comfortable state in standard atmosphere is laid on a smooth surface. A calibrated ruler is used to determine the length and width of the part. Partial lengths may need to be measured to determine the length of a sample. The total length of the sample is the sum of these partial lengths. Samples are selected either according to the procedure outlined in the material specification of the fabric or as agreed between the interested parties. The fabric should be conditioned and measured in the relaxed state. EN 20139 standard is complied with for preconditioning, conditioning and test environments.

For the purposes of this standard,

  • The term piece length refers to the distance between the beginning and the end of the sample in the longitudinal or machine direction.
  • The expression total width of the part refers to the distance between the outermost edges of the sample measured perpendicular to the longitudinal edges.
  • The term usable piece width refers to the width of the fabric excluding any edge material, markings, pinholes or other inhomogeneous areas of the fabric.
