This European standard specifies methods for determining the "total thickness" (method A) and "total or component thickness" (method B) and "mass per unit area" of bitumen sheets for roofing.
Determination of the total thickness by method A is only applicable to non-embossed boards. Determining the total thickness by method B can be applied to embossed and non-embossed boards and can also be used for composite thickness measurements.
The thickness determination cannot be applied to boards with a pronounced surface texture or to boards with a substantial fibrous backing. When it is necessary to characterize these products, mass per unit area should be used instead.
The determination of the mass per unit area serves to verify the value specified by the manufacturer for the information and does not apply to perforated materials.
The thickness of the tested sheet is measured directly by means at 10 locations across the width of the sheet and the average of these values is recorded as the total thickness in mm.
The measuring device, which can measure thickness to the nearest 0,01 mm, will have planar measuring surfaces and a diameter of 20 mm, which applies a pressure of 10 kPa to the sheet surface.
