EN 1939 Self-Adhesive Tape - Standard Test for Determining Adhesion Properties

EN 1939 is used to measure the peel adhesion properties of self-adhesive tapes. Adhesive materials are cut into 24 mm wide samples and peeled off the substrate at an angle of 180°.

EN 1939 Self-Adhesive Tape - Standard Test for Determining Adhesion Properties

EN 1939 is divided into four sections describing adhesion to stainless steel, backing, primer, and double-sided tape. The standard also describes methods of performing the peeling at low temperatures and at an angle of 90°. The test usually results in a presented peel strength at an average load divided by the specimen width.

The challenges of testing this standard are:

  • Compliance with the standard;
  • Data rate used to capture peaks and troughs;
  • Grip materials of different thickness;
  • Eliminating slippage throughout the test.

This European standard includes:

  • Self-adhesive tapes - measurement of peel adhesion from stainless steel at an angle of 180°;
  • Self-adhesive tapes - measuring peel adhesion from self-support at an angle of 180°;
  • Self-adhesive tapes - Measuring the 180° peel-off adhesion of double-sided and transfer tapes;
  • Self-adhesive tapes - Measuring the adhesion of the liner to an adhesive tape at an angle of 180°.
