EN 21974 Paper - Standard Test for Determination of Tear Resistance (Elmendorf method)

It can also be used for lightweight boards if the tear resistance is within the range of the device, does not apply to corrugated board, and is not suitable for determining the diagonal tear resistance of multi-directional paper or board.

This international standard does not apply to corrugated board, but can be applied to the components of such boards. It is not suitable for determining the tear resistance of multi-directional papers in the cross direction.

A test piece consisting of overlapping sheets with a defined pre-cut slot is torn at a fixed distance using a pendulum, which exerts the tear force by moving in a plane perpendicular to the first plane of the test piece. The work done in tearing the test piece is measured by the loss in potential energy of the pendulum.

The average tearing force (total distance divided by work done) is indicated by a scale on the pendulum or digital display. The tear strength of the paper is determined from the average tearing force and the number of sheets that make up the test piece.
