EN 3-7 Portable Fire Extinguishers - Features, Performance Requirements and Test Methods

This standard specifies specifications, performance requirements and test methods for portable fire extinguishers.

EN 3-7 Portable Fire Extinguishers - Features, Performance Requirements and Test Methods

Reference to the suitability of an extinguisher for use on gas fires (class C fires) is at the discretion of the manufacturer, but only applies to powder type extinguishers that have earned a class B or class A and class B rating.

The suitability of extinguishers for use in class D fires (fires involving flammable metals) is beyond the scope of this standard in terms of test fires. However, extinguishers claiming Class D compliance are within the scope of this standard for powder extinguishers in all other respects.

It is considered dangerous to use powder and carbon dioxide fire extinguishers in class F fires. Therefore, powder and carbon dioxide fire extinguishers are excluded for compliance with class F in this European Standard.

Extinguishing a metal fire is such a special case (in terms of the metal itself, its shape, the configuration of the fire, etc.) that it is not possible to define a representative standard fire for test purposes. In class D fires, the effectiveness of extinguishers must be determined on a case-by-case basis.
