EN 13381-4 Test Methods for Determining the Contribution of Structural Elements to Fire Resistance - Part 4: Passive Protection Applied to Steel Elements

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of EN 13381-4 testing. This European standard specifies a test method for determining the contribution of applied passive fire protection systems to the fire resistance of structural steel members usable as beams or columns.

EN 13381-4 Test Methods for Determining the Contribution of Structural Elements to Fire Resistance - Part 4: Passive Protection Applied to Steel Elements

It only considers parts that are not open on the web. It cannot be directly applied to structural stress members without further consideration. Results from the analysis of I or H-sections can be directly applied to angles, channels and T-sections for the same section factor, whether used as individual elements or as supports.

This European standard does not apply to a solid bar or bar. This European standard covers fire protection systems containing only passive materials and not reactive fire protection materials as defined in this document.

The assessment is designed to cover a range of steel sections characterized by a range of thicknesses of the applied fire protection material, section factors, a range of design temperatures and a range of applicable fire protection classification periods.

This European standard contains fire test procedures specifying the tests that must be carried out to determine the ability of the fire protection system to remain compatible and adhered to the steel structure and to provide data on the thermal properties of the fire protection system.

The fire test methodology provides provisions for the collection and presentation of data that can be used as a direct input to the fire resistance calculation of steel structural members in accordance with the procedures given in EN 1993-1-2 and EN 1994-1-.

This European standard also includes evaluation that determines how to analyze test data and guides the procedures in which interpolation should be carried out.

The evaluation procedure is used to determine:

  • Any practical restrictions on the use of the fire protection system (physical performance) under the conditions of a correction factor and fire test, on the basis of temperature data obtained from testing the loaded and unloaded sections;
  • Thermal properties (thermal performance) of the fire protection system, based on temperature data from testing short steel sections.

The limits of applicability of the evaluation results resulting from the fire test are defined to the different steel sections and grades and to the fire protection system, with the permissible direct application of the results.

The test and evaluation results obtained according to this European standard are directly applicable to I and H section steel sections and hollow sections.
