EN 196-2 Cement Testing Method - Chemical Analysis of Cement

This European Standard covers methods for the chemical analysis of cement. This standard describes reference methods and alternative methods that can be considered equivalent in some cases. In case of dispute, only reference methods are used.

An alternative performance-based method using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) is described for SiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3, CaO, MgO, SO3, K2O, Na2O, TiO2, P2O5, Mn2O3, SrO, Cl, and Br. When properly calibrated against specified procedures and reference materials, it provides a method equivalent to reference methods but has not yet been validated for use as a reference procedure for compliance and non-controversy purposes.

It can also be applied to other relevant elements when sufficient calibrations are provided. This method is based on pooled sample beads and analytical validation using certified reference materials, along with performance criteria. A method based on pressed pellets of unfused sample can be considered equivalent, provided that the analytical performance meets the same criteria.

Other methods may also be used to demonstrate equivalence, provided they are calibrated against reference methods or internationally accepted reference materials.

This standard describes methods that apply mainly to cements but can also be applied to the materials of which they are composed. They can also be applied to other materials whose standards require these methods. Standard specifications specify which methods to use.
