EN ISO 472 Plastics - Vocabulary

EN ISO 472 defines terms used in the plastics industry, including terms and definitions contained in plastics standards (ISO/TC 61) and general terms and definitions of polymer science used in all aspects of plastics technology.

Besides terms in English and French (two of the three official ISO languages), this vocabulary also includes equivalent terms in German; these are placed under the responsibility of the German member association (DIN). However, only terms and definitions in official languages ​​can be considered ISO terms and definitions.

If a term has one or more synonyms, they follow the preferred term. Synonyms are listed in alphabetical order. Deprecated terms are indicated by “(deprecated)”.

IUPAC rules for source-based names of polymers specify that parentheses are used when “poly” is followed by more than one word. This International Standard follows IUPAC practice. In common usage, parentheses are not often used.

For terms involving olefins, the name commonly used in the plastics industry is used rather than the (scientific) name approved by IUPAC; for example, polyethylene is used instead of polyethylene. Some definitions in this International Standard begin with information in angle brackets. This is added to indicate that the definition is limited to a specific area.
