ISO 12152 Testing for Lubricants, Industrial Lubricants and Related Products

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ISO 12152 standard. This standard describes a test method based on single-stage spur gear equipment for determining the foaming properties of oils used for gear lubrication.

This method is used to evaluate the foaming and air release properties of lubricating oils under conditions close to actual gearbox conditions.

Excessive foaming of a serviced lubricant can adversely affect transmission service. Foaming may be caused by the oil's poor antifoam and air release properties and/or contamination of the oil in service.

Numerous laboratory glassware tests have been developed to examine the foaming properties of lubricants during formulation work, such as the test procedure for gear oils described in ISO 6247.

Because foam formation during this test differs from foam formation in a real gear drive, there is increasing demand for a standardized foam test using test conditions close to those seen in a gear drive. Lubricant requirements for gearboxes in wind turbines eventually led to this International Standard.

It was assumed by the compilers of this test method that anyone using the method would either be fully trained and familiar with all normal engineering and laboratory practices, or be under the direct supervision of such a person.
